Address: The Canadian audiovisual industry: We mean business. |
In a period of economic restraint, the Canadian audiovisual industry must embrace innovation and advocacy. As outlined in its corporate plan, Fostering Cultural Success, Telefilm Canada is encouraging the industry to diversify its funding sources, most notably from the private sector. At the same time, the culture agency is exploring new sources on the industry’s behalf.
In order to facilitate these new funding partnerships, we as whole must do a better job at telling our success stories and at creating demand. Canadian producers, broadcasters and distributors need to work together to ensure that content is properly showcased, viewed and sold.

Panel Sponsored by TC Media
11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. (Nova Scotia and Newfoundland Rooms)
Session: Content Everywhere - Old Models, New Platforms and Creating Original Content Online |
The brave new world of user generated content may soon be behind us as YouTube – the defining UGC player – looks to professional original content to drive audience engagement. So what happened to video creation democracy and direct contact with viewers? As video traffic on the Internet explodes, the Hulus, Yahoos and Googles are turning to premium content to grab and hang on to audience eyeballs. Does this development represent the biggest opportunity for Canadian producers since specialty television? Or just more of the same on a different platform – but with production budgets at a fraction of what they are for television? From the front lines of online content creation – hear what’s working online today and where the industry is headed….
This panel is being held to coincide with the release of Content Everywhere: Mapping the Digital Future for the Canadian Production Industry by Duopoly Research, and sponsored by the Canada Media Fund and the Ontario Media Development Corporation. Content Everywhere will provide market intelligence about the major players and developments in the original digital content space in the US, and ask key questions about what this could mean for Canadian producers and Canadian cultural policy.
