BDU Content Strategies:
Can Cable and Phone Companies Do Their Own Thing?
Cable and telephone companies offering television services are beginning to bypass broadcasters and acquire content directly from independent producers and Hollywood studios, particularly for their on-demand platforms. For example, Rogers Cable recently did a deal with CBS Paramount International Television to offer Survivor: Cook Islands via its video-on-demand service, marking the first major U.S. studio VOD agreement for one of its current prime-time series. Meanwhile, SaskTel will be looking to independent producers in part to supply programming for its Max Local On Demand local community programming service. Is this the beginning of the end for broadcasters in the broadcasting value chain? What are the implications for broadcasters and independent producers? Can and will cable and phone companies do their own thing in the future? What are their content strategies going forward?
