Ottawa, May 10, 2010 – The Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) congratulates the Government of Canada for recognizing the important role content creation plays in the digital economy, and for committing to develop a long-term plan that will stand the test of time.
“Today’s announcement demonstrates that the Government clearly recognizes digital media as being crucial to both Canada’s economic and cultural future,” says Norm Bolen, President and CEO, CFTPA. “We believe it important to have a broad and open dialogue in order to best position Canada for prosperity in the 21st century. Independent producers look forward to participating in the national consultation that was launched today.”
The CFTPA appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage last week and proposed a framework for Canada’s national digital media strategy. The CFTPA’s proposed strategy identified four key underpinning objectives that will help ensure Canada’s strategy is successful: broadband infrastructure, Canadian control, basic access and professional content.
“No one has a crystal ball with which to predict with certainty the future of digital media,” says Bolen. “But, there is one thing we do know. An environment where all stakeholders collaborate is the only productive way of achieving our goals to ensure Canadians enjoy the best standard of living possible.”
The CFTPA is a national trade association that represents successful Canadian independent screen-based media production entrepreneurs working in the English market in television, feature film, and interactive media. We represent about 400 members located throughout the country.
