Independent Producers Welcome Job Boost From Ontario Government

Ottawa, June 30, 2009—The Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) applauds the Ontario government for proposing further enhancements to the province’s permanent film and television production services tax credit.  The move will enhance employment opportunities for thousands in the province and it will help ensure Ontario remains a global leader in the production industry.

“We commend the McGuinty government for its strategic investment in the film and television sector and for its commitment to working with British Columbia and Quebec in a coordinated approach to attracting more business,” says Norm Bolen, President and CEO, CFTPA. “The production industry is an important part of the creative economy, generating close to $2 billion in activity in Ontario alone every year.  This investment is timely and will result in considerable dividends for the province longer term.”

The changes will allow producers to claim additional tax credits on all production costs incurred in Ontario.  In addition to qualifying labour credits under the existing Ontario Production Services Tax Credit, producers will now be able to include the rental or purchase of qualifying tangible properties such as equipment and studio rentals.

“The Ontario government also deserves credit for other recent moves to support the independent production sector,” says Sandra Cunningham, Chair, CFTPA. “The government has made the enhanced 35 per cent Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit permanent. It has also announced a $10 million pilot that will refund a portion of costs associated with IP development to Ontario production companies. The CFTPA hopes Ontario’s vision may lead to harmonization talks with other provinces and the federal government.”

The CFTPA is a non-profit, trade association representing almost 400 companies in the Canadian production industry. The association promotes the general interests of Canadian producers by lobbying government on policy matters, negotiating labour agreements, and offering mentorship programs and copyright initiatives.
