INDEPENDENT PRODUCERS CALL FOR NATIONAL DIGITAL MEDIA STRATEGY TO POSITION CANADA FOR PROSPERITY IN THE GLOBAL DIGITAL ECONOMY
May 6, 2009, Ottawa –The Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) today called on the federal government to launch national consultations with a view to developing a national Digital Media Strategy for Canada.
“It is safe to say we are well into the Digital Revolution. This is rapidly changing the face of communication as we know it,” says Norm Bolen, President and CEO, CFTPA. “We have the talent, the innovation and the drive in Canada to be leaders in the global digital economy. A concerted strategy in this area will mean stronger economic, social and cultural prosperity for all Canadians as we move further into the knowledge-based, technology era.”
Such a review should take into account the need for a modernized legislative and regulatory framework. It should also examine the role of the key federal institutions. Lastly, the review must also a look at how to improve the system of financial support to the independent production sector.
Appearing before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage, Mr. Bolen told members from all parties that Britain, France and Australia have all recently announced such initiatives. In October 2008, France Numérique 2012 was unveiled to ensure France is among the top nations in the digital economy by 2012. In January 2009, Digital Britain was released to secure the UK’s place at the forefront of innovation, investment and quality in the digital and communications industries.
“Especially in these times where terms like ‘economic stimulus’ are daily headlines, a national Digital Media Strategy will strengthen the health of our communications sector, create jobs, and grow our international competitiveness,” says Mr. Bolen. “We must not allow Canada to fall behind in this area.”
The CFTPA is a non-profit, trade association representing almost 400 companies in the Canadian production industry. The association promotes the general interests of Canadian producers by lobbying government on policy matters, negotiating labour agreements, and offering mentorship programs and copyright initiatives.
