GOOD NEWS FOR INDEPENDENT PRODUCERS IN FINAL WEEK OF ELECTION CAMPAIGN

Ottawa, October 7, 2008 - The Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) is pleased Conservative leader Stephen Harper has cancelled changes that would restrict which film and television projects are eligible for tax credits.  Harper made the announcement in Toronto today as part of his detailed election platform.

The CFTPA helped lead a major industry initiative against the original provisions contained in Bill C-10 last spring by outlining how impractical and potentially dangerous this language could be.  The omnibus tax bill is expected to be reintroduced to the House when it reconvenes later this year.

“The arts and culture industry have been an important part of debates during this election campaign,” says Guy Mayson, President and CEO of the CFTPA. “We need to work further with government to grow our industry to provide even more jobs for Canadians.”

The CFTPA is a non-profit trade organization that works on behalf of almost 400 companies engaged in the production and distribution of English-language television programs, feature films, and interactive media products in all regions of Canada.  More specifically, it promotes the general interests of its members provincially, federally, and internationally; negotiates and manages labour agreements with guilds and unions; administers copyright collectives; trains new industry entrants through 7 national internship programs; and undertakes a number of other specific initiatives that help increase awareness and enhance communication within the Canadian and international production communities.
