CFTPA looking for strengthened market place in BGM/CHUM deal

Bell Globemedia has made a $ 1.7 billion offer to acquire CHUM Limited which, subject to certain terms and conditions, the CHUM Limited Board of Directors has accepted. The transaction is subject to CRTC review and approval.

“This is a major transaction which could signal a major restructuring of the Canadian broadcasting environment,” said Guy Mayson, President and CEO, CFTPA. “If this transaction proceeds, we would like to see it encourage competition in the market place and increase opportunities for Canadians to see Canadian programming.”

The acquisition of CHUM would greatly extend Bell Globemedia’s holdings in conventional and specialty television, as well as radio.

“CHUM has been a big supporter of Canadian Independent Production. We would want to ensure that the transaction results in a strengthened commitment to working with Canadian Producers in the creation of quality Canadian programming.” said Ira Levy, Chair, CFTPA.

The CFTPA is a non-profit, trade association representing almost 400 companies in the Canadian production industry. The association promotes the general interests of Canadian producers by working with government on policy matters, negotiating labour agreements, and offering mentorship programs and copyright initiatives.
