Producers Laud British Columbia Tax Credit Changes

The Government government of British Columbia has increased its support for the film and television industry by improving the labour-based tax credits. Film Incentive British Columbia, for domestic productions, will increase from 20% to 30% and the British Columbia Production Services Tax Credit, for foreign location shooting, will increase from 11% to 18%. The existing digital animation or visual effects (DAVE), regional and training tax credits remain in effect.

“We are thrilled that the government has acted so promptly by increasing the provincial tax credits.” says Julia Keatley, chair of the BC Producers ’ Branch of the Canadian Film and Television Production Association. “The film business is an extremely competitive business, not only in Canada but around the world, and this will allow BC producers of both domestic and service production to keep their projects filming in our province and to continue to build our industry throughout BC.” said Keatley.

“ Government The provincial government has urged the film industry to address the concerns raised in the Tysoe Report. We, as producers, renew our commitment to work with the government to resolve the outstanding issues and we thank them for their continuing support of our industry.” says Neil Haggquist , vice-president of the BC Producers ’ Branch of the CFTPA . The government struck an Industrial Inquiry Commission into the BC's film industry to look at labour issues . . Justice Tysoe delivered his report containing five recommendations in March of last year.

The CFTPA is a non-profit trade association representing almost 400 Canadian production companies involved in the Canadian production industry. The association promotes the general interests of Canadian producers by lobbying government on policy matters, negotiating labour agreements and offering mentorship programs and copyright initiatives.
