Canuck Production Industry Continues to Grow

A healthy balance between foreign location shooting and certified domestic production is the driving force behind the most recent industry statistics released today at the Canadian Film and Television Association's Prime Time in Ottawa conference. The highlights of Profile 2002, the widely respected industry report, were presented by Pat Ferns, president, Banff Television Foundation, and Jacques Bensimon, chairperson, National Film Board of Canada, at the Chateau Laurier Hotel. Analysis and data for the sixth annual report was compiled by the CFTPA, it's sister association in Quebec - the APFTQ, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Profile 2002 Highlights

Increases in all of the following

  • Canadian certified production to $2 billion.
  • Total foreign revenues collected by Canadian producers to $2.2 billion. Foreign location shooting rose to $1.8 billion.
  • The production industry employed 134,400 Canadians in 2000-01 - 51,700 direct jobs and 82,700 indirect jobs.
  • Non-certified productions and broadcaster in-house production represented activity exceeding $1.2 billion. Non-certified productions alone exceeded $300 million. Broadcaster in-house productions counted for $887 million.

"It reflects the important role we play in the Canadian economy and that we are a growth industry. Every year more people continue to be employed by it," said Elizabeth McDonald, CFTPA president and CEO. "The report does not shy away from the fact that we are facing challenging times, and a period of uncertainty. But we're very pleased to see production activity has increased in most parts of the country," said Stephen Ellis, CFTPA Chair. This is the first year the data in the Profile report has been broken down by province and territory. The report also emphasizes the importance of federal and provincial tax credits, co-production treaties, Telefilm Canada and the Canadian Television Fund. Ellis confirmed that an effective combination of public and private funding helped generated nearly $5 billion last year for the Canadian production industry.

The CFTPA is a non-profit, trade association representing almost 400 companies involved in the Canadian media content production industry. The Association promotes the general interests of Canadian media content producers by lobbying government on policy matters, negotiating labour agreements, offering mentorship programs and copyright initiatives.
