Frequently Asked Questions
What is the CFTPA?
The Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) is a non-profit, trade association representing almost 400 Canadian companies involved in the media content production industry. With offices in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver, the association promotes the interests of media content producers by lobbying government on policy matters, negotiating labour agreements, offering mentorship programs, copyright initiatives, holding an annual conference, and producing industry publications. The CFTPA is not involved in the production side of the business. For more information go to the About Us section of this website.
How do I join the CFTPA?
Canadian producers and companies can apply online. The cost of being a member depends on the size and type of your company and where it is located. If you have any further questions about membership please call Barbara Whitmer at 613-233-1444 x231.
How can I get a copy of the GUIDE?
You can order it for free online here, or you can call the Ottawa office and speak to the receptionist.
Do you have a list of Canadian producers?
How do I get in touch with a Canadian producer?
The CFTPA cannot put you in direct contact with a producer(s) but the association does publish a book annually entitled the GUIDE. This industry directory has extensive listings, including contact information for producers and production companies – the ones with a maple leaf next to their names are members of the CFTPA. If you are a member of the media and need a contact for a story please contact 613-233-1444 x227.
What government policies affect the Canadian film & television industry?
The policies that affect the industry can be investigated mainly through the departments of Canadian Heritage, Finance, Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), Industry Canada and the CRTC. The CFTPA’s GUIDE also outlines important information about production funding and tax credits.
Where do I get funding?
Public funding is available from the Canadian Television Fund, Telefilm Canada, and Canada Feature Film Fund. These are only a few of the options although they are the largest contributors. Other opportunities, including tax credits, private funds and investments, are outlined in the CFTPA’s GUIDE.
Where do I find a crew and locations for a production?
Some of this information is available in the CFTPA’s GUIDE. The locations section explores the location possibilities in each province along with the contacts for the provincial film commissions. Order the GUIDE today!
Can the CFTPA help promote screenplays?
Can the CFTPA provide me with an agent or an agency?
Unfortunately, the answer to these questions is no. The CFTPA is a non-profit trade organization. The association is not involved in producing.
How do I get a foot in the film and television industry door?
That is what the CFTPA’s National Mentorship Program is all about. This program allows mentor companies (who are members) to hire new talent, and interns (who compete for programs) to get hands-on experience in the industry.
