Membership Application FAQ

Can anyone apply for membership?
Voting membership in the CMPA is for entrepreneurial majority-Canadian owned and controlled corporations (collectively, “Persons” and individually a “Person”)

  • engaged in film, television, or interactive media production and
  • providing services (including, without limitation, financial, legal, facilities or other like services) to the film, television, or interactive media industries.

When do I get my membership number?
Membership numbers are issued at the end of the application process, after payment of dues.

What is the application process?
The membership application needs to be completed and submitted to Member Services at the Ottawa office either online, by fax, or mail. The CMPA contacts the reference(s) listed on the application form and requests them to complete a form and return it. When the completed reference forms are received the application is submitted to the Board for approval. Board meetings are held quarterly. Once the application has been approved by the board, the applicant is notified of approval and payment is requested. Once payment is received by cheque, money order or credit card, the application is finalized and a member number is issued.

What references are required?
First Works and Interactive applicants require one (1) reference; all other categories require two (2) references. In some circumstances, a list of current members in the applicant’s region can be sent to the applicant with the assumption the applicant may already know one of the members and be able to request a legitimate reference.

What is the length of membership?
Membership is one (1) year, from April 1 to March 31 of the following year.

Do membership fees stay the same depending upon when an application is submitted?
Yes. Membership fees are not prorated.

Which membership category should I apply under?

PERMITTEE MEMBERSHIP

What is the length of a First Works membership?
First Works membership is valid for two years (two membership cycles). Consecutive, or non-consecutive.  The membership fee of $275 is due for both years.

Does membership apply to a company or a person?
Membership can apply to either, depending upon the circumstances. Some producers incorporate under their own name. The membership ought to apply to whatever entity will be responsible for the production.

Does membership apply to a parent company or a subsidiary or both?
Membership held by a parent company applies to any of its subsidiary companies. However, membership held by a subsidiary cannot be used by a parent company or any other subsidiaries of the parent company.

Does the membership number apply to domestic and international treaty co-production projects?
Yes.

What is the difference between single production permits and full membership?
Single Production Permits are issued to those companies who are either not a current member of the CMPA or are not Canadian-based.  The single production permit (aka Permittee Membership) allows that production to access the Collective Agreements and be eligible for the member-based rates for administration fees which are generated from those collective agreements.  Single Production Permit Members are not voting members for the purposes of the Association.
