FAQs - Member Services Website
1. Can anyone apply for membership?
Voting membership in the CFTPA is for entrepreneurial majority-Canadian owned and controlled corporations (collectively, “Persons” and individually a “Person”)
engaged in film, television, or interactive media production and
providing services (including, without limitation, financial, legal, facilities or other like services) to the film, television, or interactive media industries.
2. When do I get my membership number?
Membership numbers are issued at the end of the application process, after payment of dues.
3. What is the application process?
The membership application needs to be completed and submitted to Member Services at the Ottawa office either online, by fax, or mail. The CFTPA contacts the reference(s) listed on the application form and requests them to complete a form and return it. The application is submitted to the Board for approval at the next board meeting. Board meetings are held in February, April, June, September, and December. Once the application has been approved by the board and all references are submitted, the applicant is notified of approval and payment is requested. Once payment is received by cheque, money order or credit card (over the phone or online), the application is finalized and a member number is issued.
4. What references are required?
The application must have the correct number of references who are current CFTPA members. First Works applicants require one (1) reference; all other categories require two (2) references. In some circumstances, a list of current members in the applicant’s region can be sent to the applicant with the assumption the applicant may already know one of the members and be able to request a legitimate reference.
5. What is the length of membership?
Membership is one (1) year, from April 1 to March 31 of the following year.
6. Do membership fees stay the same depending upon when an application is submitted?
Yes. Membership fees are not prorated.
7. What if an application is submitted for approval for the December Board meeting?
An application approved by the December Board meeting and finalized will end March 31 st of the following year. The applicant would need to renew for the full membership year April 1 – March 31 the next year.
8. When do I get the GUIDE?
The annual GUIDE is sent to all members when it is released in February. New members receive a copy of the GUIDE with their new member letter and membership number.
9. What is the First Works category?
The First Works category refers to a producer who is making a first commercial film (not a 30 second “commercial”, but a film intended for market distribution). First Works applicants should not own a copyright on a film. This category is intended for emerging producers in the industry and to provide them with access to resources and networking opportunities.
10. What is the length of a First Works membership?
First Works membership is valid for two years (membership cycles). It can be two consecutive years. If for some reason a First Works member lapses after one year, they can renew under First Works for one year at a later date.
11. Does membership apply to a company or a person?
Membership can apply to either, depending upon the circumstances. Some producers incorporate under their own name. The membership ought to apply to whatever entity will be responsible for the production.
12. Does membership apply to a parent company or a subsidiary or both?
Membership held by a parent company applies to any of its subsidiary companies. However, membership held by a subsidiary cannot be used by a parent company or any other subsidiaries of the parent company.
13. Does the membership number apply to domestic and international treaty co-production projects?
Yes.
14. What staff services does membership provide?
CFTPA staff are here to answer to the best of their ability any question a member may have. This includes issues regarding industrial affairs including collective agreements with unions and guilds; business affairs including financing (CTF, Telefilm, and private sector), tax credits, copyright, and co-production; broadcasters; HD adoption and new media; and issues related to CRTC and government agencies as well as those specific to various genres. The Toronto office specializes in industrial relations for most of Canada excluding Quebec and British Columbia, and the BC office specializes in industrial relations for British Columbia.
15. What is the difference between single production permits and full membership?
Single Production Permits are issued to those companies who are either not a current member of the CFTPA or are not Canadian-based. The single production permit allows that production to access the Collective Agreements and be eligible for the member-based rates for administration fees which are generated from those collective agreements. Single Production Permit Members are not voting members for the purposes of the Association.
