The CMPA has continuously represented the interests of independent producers of audiovisual content in Canada for over 60 years.
1948: Foundation of the “Association of Motion Picture Producers and Laboratories of Canada”
The Association of Motion Picture Producers and Laboratories of Canada (AMPPLC) was the original provincial non-profit Association created before the arrival of television, and represented film producers at both the production and post-production levels of the then fledgling industry. The AMPPLC focused its lobbying efforts on expanding opportunities for Canada's independent producers.
1974: AMPPLC changes its name to the “Canadian Film & Television Association”
The AMPPLC, a provincial association, changed its name to the Canadian Film & Television Association (CFTA) to reflect the growth of the television side of the business.
1984 (September 12): CFTA federally incorporated as the “Canadian Film & Television Association”/ Association canadienne de cinéma-télévision”
The period from 1980 to 1990 reflected dramatic growth in the film and television industry in Canada and a number of competing groups claimed to represent segments within the production industry.
1985: The Canadian Association of Motion Picture Producers merges its membership with the CFTA
The Canadian Association of Motion Picture Producers, which represented individuals, often producer-directors or writer-producers, decided to merge its membership with the CFTA for more effective lobbying and representational purposes.
1988: The Canadian Television Program Distributors' Association merges its membership with the CFTA
1989 (May 17): CFTA forms the Canadian Retransmission Collective
New retransmission right created as part of Canadian copyright reform and Free Trade Agreement between Canada and the U.S. The CRC was created to ensure that Canadian independent producers would share in the new retransmission right.
1990: The Association of Canadian Film and Television Producers merges its membership with the CFTA
The Association of Canadian Film and Television Producers, which was formed in 1984 to exclusively represent the interests of larger independents, was ultimately merged with the CFTA in 1990 to form what is now known as the CFTPA.
1990 (October 25): CFTA changes its name from the “Canadian Film & Television Association / Association canadienne de cinema-télévision” to the “Canadian Film and Television Production Association - Association canadienne de production de film et télévision”
The name of the Association was slightly tweaked to include a reference in both the English and French versions of the title to “production” and to replace the forward slash between the two titles with a dash.
1994 (October 3): CFTPA establishes the “B.C. Producers’ Branch of Canadian Film and Television Production Association”
The CFTPA incorporated its first branch society in British Columbia to deal with the province’s local and regional issues, and to provide an in situ solution for dealing with national issues in B.C.
1998: CFTPA formed the Educational Rights Collective of Canada
The Educational Rights Collective of Canada (ERCC) is a non-profit collective established to represent the interests of copyright owners of television and radio programs (news, commentary programs and all other programs), when these programs are reproduced and performed in public by educational institutions for educational or training purposes.
1999: CFTPA formed the Producer’s Audiovisual Collective of Canada
The Producer’s Audiovisual Collective of Canada (PACC) is a non-profit corporation which acts on behalf of the producers as a collective society for the management and distribution of royalties deriving from the sale of blank audiovisual media ("blank tape levies") and from the rental and lending of video recordings.
2001: CFTPA added new media production to its representation within the independent sector
2001 (April 27): CFTPA changes its name from the “Canadian Film & Television Production Association – Association canadienne de production de film et télévision” to the “Canadian Film and Television Production Association – Association canadienne de production de film et télévision”
The name of the Association was slightly tweaked to remove the ampersand in the English title and slightly tweak the French title.
2010 (July 5): The Association changes its name from “Canadian Film and Television Production Association – Association canadienne de production de film et télévision” to the current “Canadian Media Production Association”
